A Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal Academy of Music, she won the Else Cross Prize for pianoforte. She then studied film scoring at UCLA with Don Ray, Gerry Immel, and Jerry Goldsmith, after which she returned to the UK to Middlesex University, where she earned her PhD in music and subsequently taught composition there for eight years.
